From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

  • who was the asshole who disliked this?

  • doesn't matter what his job was. all that matters is he's a lost soul who really wants to recapture the innocence and bliss of his past, and now he's lost in a cold, steel world. Malick contrasts the organic, almost heavenly imagery of the kids playing in the water with doom-like images of skyscrapers and utter spiritual loneliness. there's that ominous machine like breeze that drowns out eveything the sean penn character hears. Very well done

  • A lot of people disliked it. Check the web.

  • i dont think his dad was an architect (although he couldve been). judging by brad pitt's surroundings when he was at his job, he looked more like an engineer. but he may very well have been am architect.

  • @Jammed9000 I think he's an architect like his dad

  • So what's his job meant to be?
