Probably the best known steam locomotive of all time. Built by Nigel Gresley for the Great Northern Railway in 1923, the year the company became part of the London & North Eastern Railway, and a full twelve years before the height of the LMS v. LNER race to the north.

  • Traditionally 4472 had a conventional LNER high-pitched steam whistle. In LNER days only Gresley's streamlined A4 pacifics had a chime whistle. 4472 was fitted with her chime whistle in very recent times: part of a package of upgrades deemed necessary for safety when hauling excursion trains on Network Rail's high-speed routes. Her whistle is not an LNER chime whistle - is it American?
