Civil servants and several other trade unions launched a one day strike on the 30th. They demonstrated and picketed offices across Britain to defend jobs, services, pensions and wages. The Public and Commercial Services union strike was UK-wide and several teaching unions were on strike in England and Wales. Teachers from the NUT and the ATL walked out as did the lecturers union the UCU. Many other unions showed solidarity with the striking workers and gave comradely greetings at rallies in different parts of Britain. 750,000 took action throughout the UK. Many trade unionists joined with the three quarters of a million taking action and added to the tens of thousands of marchers who thronged the London streets in protest at the cuts. Demonstrations also took place in other towns. Up north a bus decked out in trade union flags and banners against cuts did a tour of the picket lines to give some support to the striking workers. The strikes closed down schools in England and Wales and courts were closed, and delays occurred at airports due to the Border Agency staff taking industrial action. For many years since the damage Thatcher wreaked on the unions industrial action has been relatively modest in most parts of Britain compared with the amount of strike action and even riots that happen more frequently abroad. Greek and Egyptian and other countries' riots have frequently been broadcast on the news and some smaller scale riots have taken place in London too, but it is inevitable that rioting and general strikes will increase in the UK too if the program of extreme austerity measures is put into practice. Already, cuts have been affecting people but it is due to get much, much worse unless the populace rise up against such measures. There have been smaller strikes and the businesses of tax-dodging billionaires have been targetted by activists against cuts. Organisations such as UKUncut have frequently been involved in direct action against banks and tax-dodgers like Vodafone and Coalition of Resistance, an umbrella organisation which incorporates or supports many smaller groups fighting against cuts has been helping organise against the cuts. On Thursday 30th at 12 noon, a Scots rally took place, several unions were represented including UNISON and the FBU and the National President of the PCS Janice Godrich gave the closing speech. She had a message for the thieving expenses fiddler in the government with 4 homes who would attack vital services: "Keep your grubby hands off our pensions!" She also gave a warning to the UK government by drawing comparisons with workers in Egypt and Greece: "If you don't negotiate properly we'll be back and we won't be in our 1000's - we'll be in our millions!"

N30 - on 30th Nov 11 even more massive strikes in defence of jobs and pensions are set to bring the country to a standstill and they may become the biggest strikes in UK history.
