"Manuel's love song" was written by
Gus Kahn and Franz Waxman. The words to the song are, I believe, a
combination of traditional and written ones, with the tune and
the chorus being very similar to that found in Meredith and
Anderson's "Folksongs of Australia" in their song "The Little
Fish." They report the song to be Portuguese in origin, but
fairly widely known in North Queensland, Australia.

Here is the Song Spencer Tracy Sang in the 1937 Picture Captains Courageous

"Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry

Once Doc baked some biscuits and throw them away Next day no more fish come around boat to play

Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry

Said Cabbage to fish cake Who lay on one dish I beautiful cabbage You only poor fish

Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry

There's a place in my heart For the one I love best And I still keep her picture tattooed on my chest

Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry Yeah, ho, little fish Don't cry, Don't cry"

  • this film reminds me of my tender childhood...my grandfather introduced me to the film, and i loved it,im 22 now, and i still cry my eyes out of happiness and nostalgy.thanks Spencer!

Also Shane, High Noon...but this one is also so special for me

  • This song remembers a classical catalan song, "El noi de la mare".

  • Thankyou! i've been searching for who sang this song for research assignment!

  • a new found treasure

  • I saw this movie as a boy in Jamaica. I wanted to be the young lad on the boat. My family was wealthy too and i would have loved to get away from it all and learn the simple life. Instead, I grew up.

  • I was seven years old when I was taken to see it at the Regal Cinema in Stirling, Scotland. The tune and words have stayed in my memory these many years. I am now 80.
