Oren Lyons (Onondaga)
Oren Lyons was born in 1930 and raised in the traditional lifeways of the Haudenosaunee on the Seneca and Onondaga reservations in northern New York State. After serving in the army, Lyons graduated in 1958 from the Syracuse University College of Fine Arts. He then pursued a career in commercial art in New York City. A noted American Indian artist, he has exhibited his paintings widely.

Since returning to western New York in 1970 and joining the faculty of SUNY Buffalo, Chief Lyons has been a leading advocate for American Indian causes. Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga Nation, and a member of the Council of Chiefs of the Haudenosaunee, he is respected internationally as an eloquent spokesperson. In 1982, he helped to establish the Working Group on Indigenous Populations within the United Nations and has taken part in meetings of the U.N. Human Rights Commission. He also serves on the executive committee of the Global Forum of Spiritual and Parliamentary Leaders on Human Survival, and is a principal figure in the Traditional Circle of Indian Elders, grassroots leadership council of the major Indian nations of North America.

Chief Lyons has authored or edited numerous books including Native People Address the United Nations (1994); Voice of Indigenous Peoples (1992); and Exiled in the Land of the Free: Democracy, Indian Nations, and the U.S. Constitution (1992).

  • pop·u·la·tion [pop-yuh-ley-shuhn]

    noun

1.the total number of persons inhabiting a country, city, or any district or area.

  • everything said in this 10 minutes and 8 second video is 100% true, that's what matters. change value for survival. truth.

  • Let there be peace in your Hearts, you who are quick to judge from a place without the people to give sustenance to your views of their Elders. Its easy to come on YOUtube isolated from the peoples accountability. Take your complaints there. Do not shoot the messenger for Truths you don't necessarily share. That is YOUR truth. Honour it and leave this Spirit to his rest. Your time is coming to be held accountable for that which you have done to assist the people in these times. Blessings.

  • The truth is many. What we really know is what we directly experience. No matter what this man did, his message can move hearts and is meant to make a change. And that's important for me. All people on earth feel the fight between the two wolves inside of us, the good one and the evil one... We should not judge. We are all weak.

  • wow scary and sad- well I wasn't there. sorry to hear about such a loss. looks can be deceiving.

  • I agree. But there is always his actions and things I have heard him say. His actions though speak louder than words.

All the eloquent speaking doesn't make up for murder and treason.

Ronald Jones Sr. murdered at Onondaga by that council. Attempted 13 cuts of the sword, they were unsuccessful in cutting him up, but he is dead none the less.

Oren stood outside taking pictures of Ronny's house as it burnt to ground, knowing full well that Ronny was dead inside, told media know one lived there

  • people aren't always what they appear to be, even if we lived at Onondaga, how would we really know what Oren Lyons is like unless we lived through him. Looks can be quite deceiving. People appear to be one way and aren't- lie, cheat, manipulate, to themselves and to the Creator, a lot of people talk the talk, but don't walk the walk, hide what they are, false. As far as how people think, we are all brainwashed and socialized for good and bad reasons. we are born knowing nothing.

  • My point on eloquent speaker is just because he is eloquent speaker doesn't mean he is good, bad, right or wrong. Slidebargirl mentioned eloquent speaker as if that makes Oren anymore less evil. Unless you really know Oren and lived at Onondaga, what can any of you honestly say.

It ain't just Oren it is that whole Onondaga Council; they are the ones who molded his mind, besides Oren being a F&A Mason.

  • well complaining doesn't solve things. if you don't like living there move, or fix the injustices you feel.

  • you sound like an eloquent speaker, so are you like Hitler too?
