Angkor Wat is located about 7 kilometers north of Siem Reap provincial town.

The temple was built in the early 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II (AD 1113-1150).

The modern name, Angkor Wat, means "City of Temple". Angkor is a vernacular form of the Pali word Nokor (នគរ), and Sanskrit word Nagar (नगर) city. Wat is the Khmer word for temple or pagoda.

This temple was dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist.

The temple is a representation of Mount Meru, the home of the gods.
Angkor Wat, the largest monument of the Angkor group and one of the most intact, is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, reliefs and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world. This temple is an expression of Khmer art at its highest point of development. Angkor Wat is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall measuring 1300m x 1500m. The temple itself is 1km square and consists of three levels surmounted by a central tower.

Angkor Wat became a World Heritage Site in December 1992, and an International Coordinating Committee was established the following year to oversee restoration at Angkor. Today international teams are working on various temples, while the Cambodians have set up APSARA (Authority for the Protection of the Sites and Administration of the Region of Angkor).
