Why do some police choose to abuse their power?

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The suspended Lincoln police officer accused of kicking a female suspect is expected to take the stand in his trial Monday.

The defense is expected to call at least two people to the stand. An expert in defense, and Officer Edward Krawetz.

Krawetz is accused of felony assault of a woman outside Twin River slot parlor in Lincoln back in May of 2009.

Prosecutors say video images from a security camera show Officer Krawetz kicking Donna Levesque of Uxbridge, Massachusetts, in the back of the head after she made a motion toward him with her leg.

That video was shown in court on Wednesday.

She was sitting on a curb in handcuffs outside Twin River after the police had escorted her out of a bar inside for what Officer Krawetz 's partner characterized Thursday in court as "intoxicated, angry and belligerent behavior."

The two police officers were waiting for a third Lincoln police officer who would drive Donna Levesque to the Lincoln police station where she would be charged with disorderly conduct.

On Thursday, the defendant's fellow police officer at Twin River that evening testified that Officer Krawetz never expressed concern for his own safety, never said he feared serious bodily injury, never yelled out that he was in pain and never sought medical attention.

I don't think it was self defense. I mean, a cop against a woman on the ground in handcuffs, he didn't need the kick, all he needed to do was leave. What he did was not needed.

@Teufelsnachbar667 violence should never be an option, except in self defense, which he clearly was not doing because he was in no danger. Assuming his job and his authority are legitimate, he should only do what he was hired to do, which is take her in, not take personal offense and use excessive force over something as small and ineffective as what she did. She's already been shown that she's "inferior" by being handcuffed, being knocked the fuck out is unnecessary.

@terfelnachbar667 Fuck you. Self-defense my ass. She wasn't even wearing shoes and was in no position to do him any harm. All you're doing is encouraging police brutality and allowing cops to act like this, even in situations where the accused is innocent. The way he so flippantly kicks her and knocks her out shows that he's not opposed to using excessive violence over the smallest things.
