A tribute to Scarborian 'Eric Fenby' featuring scenes along the beautiful 'North Yorkshire' coast around 'Scarborough' which he knew and loved so much. Also visiting various places particularly associated with Fenby's past,
(List roughly in chronological order with the video)
FIRST - The iconic SCARBOROUGH SPA' suncourt area where in 1925 he first conducted one of his own works for strings. At that time the Spa Orchestra was under the expert baton of SPA veteran 'Alick Maclean' who was a great influence on the youg Eric Fenby.
'THE FUTURIST' theatre/cinima on the sea front where Eric stood-in to accompany the entertainments.
Various of his homes in and around Scarborough are shown.
'GLADSTONE ROAD' Junior School where Eric was first educated, just round the corner from where he was born.
'HOLY TRINITY CHURCH' where he was a chorister and later organist,
he also played at the beautiful Pre-Raphaelite inspired St Martin's Church nearby as featured in the film 'Song of Farewell'. (more yet to come on this fascinating period in Eric Fenby's history!)
'WESTBOROUGH METHODIST CHURCH' - where he was christened, NORTHRIDING COLLEGE as it was known now WESTWOOD CAMPUS
here he established the music department. This is while he was living on
'THE CRESCENT', A charming regency style crescent where the Sitwells had a home.
'STAINTONDALE' - where he lived when first married to Rowena, all within sight and the sound of that 'husky voiced sea'.
Fenby spent much time walking with his dog Peter upon
'CLOUGHTON CLIFFS' as featured in Ken Russell's film 'A Song of Summer'. This was Eric's favourite place in Scarborough (and mine!) The moods of light and shade playing on seascape and landscape simply must inspire the receptive soul.
Along the scenic old Whitby railway track that pre closures used to take Eric into town from Staintondale Station. Now someones home complete with cat flap!
From here summer fades into an autumn landscape and eventually to Scalby Church.
Please enjoy the seaside scenes in Scarborough. It is a lovely seaside town rich in history and surrouded by the most amazing natural beauty. As previously stated -
It was here at the 'Spa' in what is now the 'Suncourt' as shown where Fenby had his first taste of orchestral music and was even allowed to take up the baton. What was to follow forms one of the most inspiring episodes in musical history ......Eric Fenby however still remains The Unsung Hero of Music! I only hope I do not offend his modesty by showing this tribute. But please ENJOY!

@SuperDevonian1 Thanks for that - Looking forward to the 'Scarborough Jazz Festival' the end of September at the newly refurbished Spa Grand Hall. Plus the new season of the 'Spa Orchestra' in the Spa Suncourt from the end of May, along with Howard Beaumont's musical sunny afternoons! Lots of 'LIVE' music. Best regards from Jayne

Jayne, thanks for sharing these photos of the Scarborough area where Eric Fenby lived. The beautiful music of "Songs of Farewell", the masterful work by Delius which Fenby assisted in writing down, makes for a fitting soundtrack to the scenery.

Lovely shots of Scarborough's iconic Spa buildings and the connection with the greatest amenuensis in the history of music, Eric Fenby who painlessly transcribed what was in Delius's head.A miracle in my eyes.
