I have a number of Darlingtonia californica approaching the hundred. This plant is reputed not to be that easy to grow, though. To help you growing this nice plant, here are some tips. Note that the plants shown in the video are the smallest ones that I have, and were freshly repotted.

* I always keep them into fresh water (don't worry if they look submerged!);
* Avoid direct sunlight during many hours (especially if you want the pitches to become quite high and impressive);
* The substratum is either ~80% peat moss, 20% perlite; 50% peat moss, 50% (living or dead) sphagnum; or even 100% sphagnum. The most important thing is to have a light substratum (but you can also try 100% peat moss).

  • 1) Temperatures: from 15°C (cold day, shade) to 45°C (direct sun and high ambient temperature: hot day).

    2) I try to maintain as much water as I can, so that it provides some inertia against high temperatures. The more the fresh water, the fresher the roots are in, the most comfortable plants are living.

    3) Where are you living? I sell them during spring, summer, and sometimes autumn. Once I'll be able to have another website, prices will be displayed (3 sizes, 3 prices).

  • Putting ice cubes or not depends on the temperature and the sun. Normal temperature is also fine if sun is not shining `too much' or if the temperature is reasonable (say 25°C). If direct sun and T > 30°C, youl would better consider using fresh water as much as possible, but these plants are actually quite tolerant. At least if you give them as much water as they need, or even more, during spring & summer. After, pay attention.

  • Not during summer. This was during hot season. Remember that Darlingtonia californica needs to have fresh roots during warm periods. Do not even imagine doing this during winter season. Note that my growing method for Darlingtonia is extreme, and it does not necessarily work for everybody, but at least for me (100+ Darlingtonia californica plants).

  • Nice plants, I have a 3 year old and seedlings that I started over the past winter.

  • @Tommyr I've bigger ones than in this video (see e.g. my other video @ 5:00).

  • What kind of temperatures do you get in the summer and how far do you let the water level drop before adding more water?

    P.S. I don't suppose I can have one for free? LOL

  • Is it true they need cool water? i've heard that in the summer months you have to put ice cubes with the plant so they get cool water or is normal temperature also fine?

  • wow wet

    isn´t there a danger of getting fungi?
