History does not move in one direction but the trend over the last 5000 years has been in favor of Representative government. However freedom from oppression and dictatorship could not have been won even for limited periods of time without the help of people just like you. The gains of "Democracy" (I.E. Republican forms of government with strictly limited powers are in a slow retreat today. Over the years the Untied States Constitution has been interpreted badly by the supreme court and most politicians are more then willing to wallow in the extra power that bad supreme court decisions give them. The Federal Reserve bank prints money to an extent that strips hard work of its meaning or purpose. Similar events happened just before Caeser subverted the Roman republic and Napoleon subverted France. Fortunately for Americans neither Obama nor Bush before him can be counted among the Napoleon's of the world but their their must be a (would be) destroyer of freedom waiting in obscurity for his moment. Fighting the forces of overreaching governmental power requires reforms on many fronts.
1) Checks and balances must be put back into place world wide (while still allowing government to act effectively within a much diminished range of prerogatives.) Rolling back the Patriot act in the US and deeply reforming the most centralized laws in EU are essential to prevent a thin majority from riding roughshod over large minorities. Even democracy can become simple lawlessness when it becomes "2 wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner". Governments role is to protect life and property never to make decisions about the allocations of such things.
2) The US must pull back on this foreign commitments in order to combat this budget crisis and all industrialized nations will have to pull back on social spending to truly sustainable levels. This is hard to do in a democracy based on popular sovereignty but it must be done.
3) Age 25 appears to be the optimal voting age as the human brain does not reach its full adulthood until then and is prone to shorter term gratification and thinking until it fully matures. For the first time the science on this is quite well established.
4) Those who use more government services then they give back in taxes should not have some limits on voting in elections. Those who contribute more in taxes then they use in government services should have enhanced representation in elections. A reform of this type could prevent republics from "taxing and spending themselves to death" as the Weimar Republic and many others did a long time ago.
5) The money must be backed by precious metals, durable commodities and pollution credits (cap and trade?). Governments should not have the power to print money un-backed by commodities accept during time of war. With durable commodities (mostly precious metals) backing the money, governments would not be able to tax the most vulnerable via wild inflation. Fractional reserve banking should be considered a form of fraud in any court of law.
6) "Complexity beyond a certain point is fraud"-- P.J. O'Rourke. The number and complexity of regulation should be reduced to a "mentally manageable number" so the majority can actually understand the laws they must follow in advance of any action and not after the fact. Too many laws can become the same as being lawless if you have a talented lawyer to thwart or "outwit" the spirit of the laws. Less is clearly becoming more in an over regulated world.
7) Governments have the right to use force ONLY in a defensive manner and NEVER to initiate the use of force under any conditions. Otherwise government becomes merely the largest best armed street gang in a world full of such things
the united states is NOT a democracy, it's a republic.

True enough. However even intellectuals make that mistake and I could not find a map maker that did quite the great job this one did. Thus I allowed this little mistake to slide.
