Sam Cooke doesn' t explain what happened to this relationship in the song, except to say that the downfall of the relationship was preordained by the difference in their ages, and because 16, in Sam Cooke's book, was just to young to make the kind of commitment that he was looking for. Of course, Sam Cooke sang this song, but I don't know who wrote it or whether they wrote from personal experience.
Many relationships are doomed from the start, in retrospect, by differences that were obvious on the first day and intolerable on the last day.
