A living nerve cell (neuron) on a glass coverslip is imaged by confocal microscopy during early stages of its development (time is in hours and minutes). The cell sends out a number of minor processes (neurites) that undergo a series of dynamic extension and retraction events until one neurite eventually grows out and becomes the axon, which connects the neuron to other cells.
