Emily Dickinson lived during the 1800s in Massachusetts. Although she lived a highly introverted and reclusive life, her works display an extraordinary understanding of life, nature, and love.
What is this poem about? Hope is portrayed here in metaphor as a bird that perches ever faithfully on the shoulder of the soul. Its song is sweet and true and everlasting, just like hope should be. And even in the darkest and most unlikely places, like "the strangest sea", hope can be found if one only cares to look.
I thought this was a particularly uplifting poem. I hope everyone is well.

Coming from an Emily Dickinson fan I must point out that the opening line is wrong. It is 'Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul' rather than 'on our souls'. Thanks for uploading such a great poet's work.

exquisite! It is one of my favorite poems by Emily Dickinson. I remember so intensely when I visited her grave several years ago and left a poem of my own at her headstone as a sign of gratitude. Maybe she came and read it one day...
