Alan Hovhaness' Magnificat, opus 157, was composed in 1958, commissioned by the Serge Koussevitsky Music Foundation. The composer wrote: "I have tried to suggest the mystery, inspiration, and mysticism of early Christianity in this work." The Magnificat, for four soloists, chorus and orchestra, has continued to enjoy popularity around the world.
