1986-7 were Ten in Melbourne's most successful years in its 40 year history, thanks to a number 1 news service presented by David Johnston and Jo Pearson. Ten was beating Nine in the ratings. So what do you do when you are used to being No1 and suddenly are not. You buy the competition. In 1988 Kerry Packer (Nine's owner)bought Jo Pearson and Rob Gell for a reported Million dollars a year - Just to get them off Ten. Rob presented the wether on Nine for the next decade, but Jo's projects failed. But that did not matter to Kerry. Nine become Number 1 again and Ten had almost gone broke two years later.
