I think ye should have a look at all the Big armies. The countries are usually poor or in debt example. The US is in 13 trillion debt

Russia has a large army but no infrastructre

China is a 2nd world country the same as Russia and alot of eastern european and African countries. I dont think its logical to have a large Military

@ado75 Potential lunatic fringes are what we need. All governments are corrupt and need to be challenged. The government can do what they like because they have the armies behind them. Wars are against these citizenries, these are the ones who die and suffer, not protecting them, thats my issue.

@DylanBobMr Well in an ideal world there would be no war. But even on our own wee Isle we have active extremist and paramilitary groups and significant organised crime gangs. These groups all have an ability to destabilize a state especially during times of economic stress. Armies in most cases are insurance policies against chaos. In our case it ensures the citizenry have a bigger stick than any potential lunatic fringe.

@12345TheRonan For the record. Army = 8,500 max, Aer Corps = 800, Naval Service = 1200 (approx figures). Even when I was in the FCA 20 years ago there may have been 25,000 on the books but the active reserve was about 12 - 15,000 and it has been considerably streamlined since then. You don't need a freedom of information request for these figures as they are public knowledge.

Look at the polish army is it a conscript force? Yes I think it is meaning that 80% of the army personal had to be draged in to serve in it.
