The Woodmans is an inspiring portrait of one family's fall and redemption in the often brutal world of art. Family patriarch George is a professor and painter. Wife and mother Betty is a ceramicist who earns her own show at The Met. Charlie, their son, is a video artist. Most highly regarded is Francesca, their daughter, one of the late 20th century's most recognized photographers, whose fame came after a tragedy that would forever scar the family.

I love the film because iLOVE the work of Francesca Woodman! However, I was shocked by the documentary as it reveals the parents as despicable people, competing with their own child ! Very self-absorbed people! I was appalled! Sorry to ay that but truly awful to see.

It is unusual that she got so discouraged at the young age of 23! She did get support and recognition from her peers and teachers at RISDE. There's something wrong with this picture. Suicide is in its own unique category, and we don't have the key to it yet. Still, the only ones who showed emotion at her loss were the two friends who couldn't hold back their tears. There seemed to be no heat emanating from that stone, ceramic mother, just narcissism. And the Dad is an enigma. Enough said.

Sarai It is the first time I've seen her work. It is phenomenal, as is the prodigious amount and variety of it. It was groundbreaking for its time and remains original. This is not a one idea artist and she rivals some very famous names.. Amazing that she achieved such a body of work by the time she was only 23! It seems she didn't give herself a chance! Weird family. Mother appears icy and the father is now ripping off her work,

but by comparison his is stiff, and not generic.

I was psychically sickened towards the end, listen to the parents and brother talking about how they saw her spreading fame and though,"Hey I'm an artist too! why can't I have a slice of that pie"... hearing the father say "I may not have as much fame as franchesca but I am still alive and 73.. Francseca will never be 73" not in a tone of sadness but almost glee

i think there was more in the family life then they were willing to share. I feel the mother especially seemed egotistical.

A passing remark in the film is that on the day she committed suicide she had become aware that her application for an NEA grant had been denied (National Endowment for the Arts). the film could have spent more time discussing the impact that the denial had on her. A film could the trouble caused by the NEA. It is a demonstration of how the USA has a Soviet Socialist system where it is so important for an artist to obtain the approval & money of the government that failure can inspire suicide.

This is a beautiful piece of work.

It raises, explores and - in the end - leaves unanswered so many provocative questions.

Watch it tonight on PBS. ~ The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently. The Dawn, Sec. 297
