@Zant177 Aperture Science and Black Mesa were competitors. We know this from what was displayed on projectors in Portal 1, and because Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner mention Aperture Science in Half-Life 2 Episode 2, talking about a ship they had called the "Borealis". In Portal 2 in the underground levels there is a hiden door which leads to a drydock for the Borealis.
