@hazmatac hmm I think that it isn't so much the begging for alms that is the crux of the issue, rather the essence behind such an act. It is but a superficial manifestation of the spirit of giving up control over one's ability to meet our never ending desires. If there really is a day everyone becomes a monk/nun, I guess the act of begging for alms would correspondingly morph into another act (eg careful rationing of food) without changing the underlying essence just my take on this :D

@Witaya4you What one needs to "believe" or have faith in... is Ajah Chan's experience until one has a direct experience of the Truth of what he is saying. t's a long road. One needs faith /belief to travel any path. That does not mean one shouldn't question and test what is being told.

@EverythingSpirals it is logical. If all the monks are not allowed to work to try to make food for themselves, then if everyone WERE to be a monk, there would be no one to make the food. That is logical. I don't remember why I thought that they have to beg, maybe they don't, I thought they did. But if it is a part of their tradition, obviously it wouldn't work, at least for maybe 40 days or something, in which case we would all die from starvation. No working for food means no food to eat. Peace

@hazmatac That would never happen though. It's like saying if everyone became enlightened, the human race would die in one generation. What are the chances of that? The pull towards samsara is infinitely greater than the pull towards nibbana. There will always be those lost in greed, hatred, and delusion.

If everyone became monks, would they all die really soon because they have no one to beg alms from?
