the island is called britain after the romans brittania, when scotland and england came together after the parliamentary union of 1707 the english increasingly began to call the country great britain and by walter scott's time they even tried to call scotland north britain, unsuccessfully as can be seen by the political changes of the last 20 years, leading to the snp success of last year, finishing i hope in reclaiming our independence

if he wants to be english let him be ,but as far as the english people he is a a PADDY from IRELAND

@megatron12002 I didn't say those islands weren't part of Scotland, I said they weren't part of GREAT Britain. Only mainland Scotland is part of GB in my opinion. I'm making the point that Great Britain is an island, not a country. The country is the United Kingdom. As someone who lives in Northern Ireland I'm seriously annoyed that my Olympic team are called 'GB'. I don't live in Great Britain but I do live in the United Kingdom!

Ah Lads give us all a break, firstly why throw our nation flag, the wan the french gave at anybody, and secondly get over the border issues, us in the 26 counties are run by the IMF , now adays, as far as good player go, come on Mc Dowell and Mr Clarke, the true sportsmen of the north antrim coast, not to mention the wee island, looking forward to seeing yee all at home in Portrush later this year, and theres me shouting for home boys and me working beside Padraic Harrington, In Shankill, Co Dub

@BrianMorph64 what are you talking about? Shetlands, Orkneys, and Hebrides are part of Scotland and therefore part of Britain.
-
might i just interject, where was the "northern ireland flags"? and no other flag tossed that may have upset him as he goes into the next tournament? and why so much security?
-
terminology plitical or other
-
he swiped it more but he knows what the uproar is about or this wouldnt be an issuue

You're quite right dkr56, my main point is that NI is not part of the landmass of Great Britain. That's why the full name of the country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Northern Ireland. I'm not making any political comment on whether or not NI is British, just saying that I think 'UK' is a more inclusive name for the whole country than 'GB'.
People, what are you all getting worked up about?
The knobhead throws a tricolour in Rory's face
The nice big black policeman reaches over and removes the flag from his face. Rory did not throw anything on the ground, he probably had no idea what it was.
All this bullshit because the OP seems to be blind.
