SAS vs UH cops 4.21.09

University of Houston Students Against Sweatshops (SAS http://uhstudentsagainstsweatshops.wordpress.com/) attended a phony make UH a "Tier 1" school presentation by a bunch of brown nosing faculty. UH, a fourth tier school (according to U.S. News and World Report rankings, it would be 5th tier if there was such a thing) has been putting on a dog and pony show for the media since Dr. Renu Khator (a real corporate lackey) came to our campus in February, 2008. Dr. Khator, like most presidents before her wants to use UH as a stepping stone to a better job. So since she came here she's been shamelessly promoting herself and mouthing b.s. like "Students success comes first," unless of course students care about human rights like we do.

Four SAS members attended a meeting that was to pump up Khator's phony campaign to make UH "first tier" and the video shows what happened.

Back in October 2008 we got UH to affiliate with the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) (http://workersrights.org/). The WRC is a third party independent labor monitoring organization that inspects apparel factories around the world. They recently issued a report about a factory (Jerzees de Honduras) that makes collegiate logo apparel. Their report (http://workersrights.org/RussellRightsViolations.asp) showed that a factory that UH uses is a sweatshop. No big surprise since most American apparel factories (and third world ones are worse of course) are sweatshops according the United States government.

The bald guy and the guy in the red shirt are "undercover" cops. They don't like the first amendment and don't want us to exercise our rights on campus so they often lie and threaten us. In the video Mr. Red Shirt actually grabbed our member Yvette who was videotaping.

Yvette filed a complaint with the UH police department who has a history of sweeping staffer assaults on SAS members under the rug.
