How to remember compression basics...

Some other definitions:

1. If you see 'knee' on your compressor, That's how fast, (once the compressor has made it through it's 'attack' stage), it turns down. 'soft' knee is like a person gently turning the volume down, 'hard' is a violently turned down volume knob.

2. Peak vs. RMS - Very simply put, Peak compression will grab audio content faster than RMS. Peak looks to specific leaps in volume, where RMS is more of an average compression that is not only easier on the ears, but smoother and more transparent. Use Peak compression for more percussive content, and RMS for audio stuff that requires a gentler hand.

3. 'Auto Gain' or 'Makeup Gain' - Like I say at the end of the video, Compression is actually allowing you to turn up the overall volume of the material now that the pesky leaps in volume, or 'transients' are taken care of. 'Auto Gain' will try to do this automatically. You'll probably still need to adjust it though.

  • best explination i've ever heard...

  • @justforvideos1000 Very very hard question. Current, or all-time? Genre-specific? I have to say that if it was an all-time 20th century thing, Quincy Jones and Phil Spector... maybe.... and then there's Chet Atkins.... and Les Paul. Damn. Hard hard question.

  • Fantastic video (my tuxedo cat, Gershwin, agrees). Basic, yet aren't all things simple to understand when they are explained well. I'll be back for more.

  • You made me feel smart again!

  • DEarl, these videos are shockingly helpful. You help with tech and give great general advice. It's incredible you're this helpful. I ever see you in real life, I will give you a totally platonic, albeit inappropriately large, hug. I am very grateful! Thanks!
