George Haikalis, president of the Institute for Rational Urban Mobility, talks about an updated proposal to build a light rail train line that links the Hudson and East rivers on 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. The plan would compliment the New York City mayor's plan to make parts of Broadway auto-free.
42nd street DESPARATELY needs to get rid of cars. The buses only average 2.8 MPH even WITH supposed "bus lanes" currently.
There are other places in the city that need something like this too. The East River waterfront through Queens and Brooklyn needs FAST, FREQUENT light rail to connect with the subway stops further inland. For example, the upcoming Domino development near the Willaimsburgh bridge is a long walk from the nearest subway stop, and is served only be one infrequent bus route.
