i'm not sure it would be impossible to feed 8 billion. the trick is for each area to have access to seeds, land and irrigation to grow locally. not being able to grow locally seems to be the biggest problem.
the trade policies and mandates imposed everytime the WTO/IMF loan money seem to be what has driven many local farmers in 3rd world countries out of business. we've MADE them dependent upon our aid. those orgs undercut their prices, rip their land and resources from them.

you know what else i just heard works with bug repellent for protecting crops? sliced cucumbers placed in aluminum pans around the crop area. evidently it produces a smell that repels insect predators.
i plan on trying this next year.
