During the British rule, people were not allowed to gather at any place for fear of revolt .This festival was thought of by Lokmanya Tilak to get people together for religious prayers and thus meet and discuss the British occupation of India. Over the years, this has now become a national festival that is celebrated for ten days, culminating in immersion of the Lord Ganesh idols in the sea / river / lakes etc.
