This movie shows my 1888 Wharfedale stop cylinder printing press in operation prior to moving it to my workshop in May 2004. The previous owner, printmaker and designer David Esslemont, can be seen demonstrating the press by hand and then driven by electric motor.
I was instructing apprentices on these at the WA Government print up to 1980 lol , it was parked next to Albert RO1 !

I well remember working in a printing works ("The Coronation Press" at Deaf Hill, Co. Durham) and having to clean down the double demy wharfdale, machine was that big it took up the whole of the back wall in the print room, ah good times, would go back tomorrow if could.

had one of these at the tech college in 1962 . You had to yuck the rollers out of the bearings sideways when washing up i pulled hard and the teacher was stood directley behind keeping a check on me BANG i got him right in the throat with my elbow . Down he went like a sack of spuds memories thought id topped him

Hello I worked on one of these machines in the late 50s when I was just 15yrs old.What I can remember the printing firm was called Tribe brothers in St. Albans,they also had a place in London.They had about 6 of these machines.We use to print a lot of posters for Cinemas And theatres. I use to feed and the machine minder would take of the printed sheet. We used a lot of wooden type.Some posters had morcombe & wise on we also printed Cruffs dog show posters,black on yellow paper.Good mem. Eric

I used to run a Quad Crown one of these, I seem to remember a trip pedal to allow the sheet to be picked up by the grippers so both hands were free to fee the individual sheets of paper, great clip not seen one since 1980.
