One thing I never noticed: Mariah doesn't seem to be communicating to the listener when she sings. It's like the song is mechanically complete, but spiritually vacuous. Diana's version is utterly haunting. Ross doesn't try for any perfection of pitch or other mechanics. Ross is a more natural singer. I feel no connection between Mariah and her listeners.

I sometimes do not like the way she uses that breathy vocal. It is actually not a good thing for her to do for the heath of her vocal chords.
