Credit goes to the Otherpower.com discussion board. DanB I believe.

This demonstrates the gravity based furling mechanism that is adopted with most small scale wind generators, it is both reliable and simple.

  • The furling occurs when the wind is strong, it takes the face/surface of the blades and turns them out of the direction of the wind and reduces the efficiency of the wind on the blades and effectively puts 'brakes' on the blades and thus slows the rotation down. This keeps the mech from overheating and burning up. When the wind slows down, the face of the blades come back more perpendicular to the wind direction and thus gain a better efficiency again with slower wind. This is an old design.

  • I really didn't understand can you make it more simple

  • this really didn't explain the principle well... how does it work? thanks!

  • may i know how the wind turbine back to position after it furls?

  • Furling

  • so by increase the size of the tailblade you can setup by what windspeed he has te turnover to pull the rotor out of the wind??

please make closeup of your construction! thanks! great job and nice wooden fanblades you made!

  • Elastic turbine??? :-) Good example of furling
