I'm always looking for interesting MAE (Mirrorathlete Enterprises) tranquil scenes to shot. This time I was surprised by something I didn't expect. Got up in the morning on one of my Northern California camping excursions. You may think its silly, that's ok... At the least the footage provides for mesmerizing and interesting viewing.
Was walking down a fire trail to take footage of a nesting bald eagle (which I didn't get because these things drew apon my focus) and noted strange beeflies hovering from my chest to head level. I didn't really know what to make of the little critters... Was like they were observing my every movement without sound until they moved in one direction or the other, kind of like a UFO saucer but much smaller with bug eyes, couldn't see wings, but I knew they had them (otherwise no sound....weird). These golden brown beefly bodies were eyeing me something fierce (this is the build up to make the story more interesting).
Saw one immediately to the right flank of my head hovering as I slowly turned to look at it, it looked at me without fear... kind of creapy as I recall as it hovered perfectly without verticle, or horizontal movement. I also noted, they would not follow me in the shade, just as I began to move away to distance myself-thought I might be over taken by the buggers... But they didn't follow me to the dark shade... At Least I knew they weren't vampires;] Reminded me of little alien creatures with intelligence. They seemed to move in unison with the air currents more so then my movement (you can hear them at this point-when hovering you can't hear them. I set up my tri-pod and fixed it on a group of them. Anyway, make out of it what you will. I was mesmerized by the little critters.
Think I stayed down in the valley floor for at least 45 minutes watching there flight patterns as soon As I realized within the first two minutes after the stare down they met me no harm. Just as soon as they appeared, they left. These were not bees, or flies. A hybrid or alien BeeFly? I've never seen anything like this and I walk these particular Northern California fire roads and camping areas all the time. I believe this will make for a great relaxation and hypnosis footage (humerous & strange but has potential). Give it a try. See if you can count how many little critters hover in one area at any point in time. You'll get trapped into the flow of it as you listen to their little whizing noises as they move. My only regret... couldn't get closeups, they were too fast and even when they hovered, didn't show in my lense on focus... Don't know why not.... Maybe cause their alien critters;]
Very cool. You did a great job. Your right this would make a very affective relaxation video, I would buy it. I We have those bugs here in Oregon, they fly like a dragonfly but the eyes are what is really strange. Enjoyed the story as well.
