Islam - Female Genital Mutilation

Female circumsicion is not just a problem in Sub-Saharan Africa.
About 6,000 girls fall victim to genital mutilation every day, that's about 2 million a year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 100 and 140 million women worldwide are circumcised. Most circumcised women live in 28 African countries, as well as in Asia and the Middle East.

Although many Imams forbid the practice,
various groups within Islam promote it.
It is reinforced in the Hadith, Shariah law and the by the consensus of numerous Islamic communities.

The Hadith-
Narrated by Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah: A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The Prophet Muhammad (PBOH) said to her: Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband. (Sunan Abu-Dawud: book 41, number 5251, Hasan)

The Shariah-
The following reference to Shariah law comes from Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri, Reliance of the Traveller - A Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law. This book comes with the approval al-Azhar University.

e4.3 Circumcision is obligatory (for every male and female) by cutting off the piece of skin on the glans of the penis of the male, but circumcision of the female is by cutting out the clitoris (this is called khufaad).

The Hadith-

One interpretation of this passage is that the woman was going to proceed with the circumcision anyway; Muhammad suggested that she remove a smaller amount of her genitalia than she had perhaps intended to, so it doesnt mean that he approve what she is doing.

The Qur'an (An-Nisa': 119) states that Satan will try to trick humans into body modification: "And I will surely lead them astray, and arouse desires in them, and command them and they will cut the cattle's ears, and I will surely command them and they will change Allah's creation." This might be interpreted as forbidding FGM as well as tattoos, piercing and any other modification that alters the design of the human body as Allah created it.

there is no reference to circumcision at all in the Qur'an, male circumcision in Islam as a "sunnah" act. there is nothing in the quran about female circumcision.

Its suck a shame these people think it's a part of Islam to be circumcised! I have never ever in my 21 years heard of a GIRL being cut! It's a cruel tradition that's been passed down from generation to generation. Just remember there's a big different between tradition and religion.

Islam is a cruel and vicious religion! What they put their little girls through breaks my heart :( I would think that remembering the pain they had endured themselves during this brutal practice that they would want protect their children and make sure that they NEVER went through the same. Just plain sick and it needs to be stopped!! :(
