Katie Clarke as Clara Johnson singing "The Light in the Piazza" in the musical of the same name, by Adam Guettel. Broadcast by PBS on Live from the Lincoln Center. Also starring Victoria Clark.

Four words: it made me cry.

  • personally, i much prefer Katie Clarke's acting AND voice to that of Kelli O'Hara. Clarke's voice is perfect for the role of Clara. Its sweet and innocent and young. and absolutley wonderful.

  • I think Katie is better. First because she was the first Clara I was introduced to and I think she embodies innocence and the spirit of the character better. She brings a more childish element to the character that should be there but isn't as strong in Kellie's preformance.

  • @pudgeuncle uhhh dude i was citing patti and the other two as good actors....and i don't know EVERYTHING about the theater. but i do know enough to have a fucking valid opinion about things. and stage presence and persona is of course vital, but all brilliant actors have that right? they transform into a character but breathe who their own essence into it. and musical comedy is a different style of theatre from shakespeare but it's theatre nonetheless...and should be treated as such

  • @jaiadore Oh I must defer to a response from a 21 year old who must know EVERYTHING about the theater. I have probably seen a Broadway show for almost every day you've been alive. And if you are suggesting that Patti LuPone is not a fine actress, then there is little to say. Musical theater is often less about acting and more about the actors stage presence and persona. And of course, this depends on the role but truthfully much of musical comedy is not like acting Hamlet.

  • @rebekahbryan understand that clara while 26 has the mind of a 12 year old. what kind of voice should clara have? a very very light soprano? or a more developed trained sound of a grown woman? katie clarke, yes, is not the world's best singer, but for the role? it works. she sounds like the way clara would. a little rough around the edges to match clara's young naivete.

  • @pudgeuncle bahahahahaa. please....a line reading does not equal great acting. ahem. patti lupone? angela lansbury? bernadette peters? shall i name more? a great singer that is ho hum at acting delivers a nice and pleasant performance. a good singer and amazing actor? brilliance. of course they have to have a great voice, but it's the connection to the song and understanding of how the music and lyrics serve the story telling that should be the main focus.

  • @igardrisc95 i agree but damn.. that emotion

  • I can't believe she learned this part in just a couple of days and gave a performance THIS good!
