However, I use a small shield but no thigh armour! I just learned how to block my legs! You don't really have to move around much more either. But I will say, though I love large shields and their use, I freaking sick and tired of seeing 14th and 15th century fighters who are suppose to be nobility using 2' X 3' to 4' heaters! Wearing all that late period armour while using a big honking shield looks redundant!

Spacewolfscout-the reason why they are so quite is because they are sleeping. Big shield fighting is a snorefest.

well, to be honest! we have a few great fighters who use a lot of REAL armour and use small shields like Sir. Alexis. Neither style is perfect! Northerners defence is lacking while some southern styles offence is lacking. Also notice that Sir. Sven and his fellow An Tirians are using really short sticks that seem to be light as hell and seem to be wearing what looks like football or other sports like padding under there clothing rather than armour!

This is every bit as intense. You have to be familiar with both styles to see it. Sven, a proponent of the small shield in a cold climate uses a dynamic offense style that makes sense in a fighting pool with like fighters. Ansteorran high style, a product of a hot climate, minimal armor, and a huge shield, is decidedly more chess-like. Texas is too hot to waste the kind of energy you see Sven exert over a three day fighting event unles you are very young or very foolish. Apples and oranges.
