A home movie of the SS Lurline on Boat Day in Honolulu. Taken in the early 1960s, this scene was a regular occurrence in Honolulu during the golden era of steamship travel (1927-1978). Each week, Matson's grand white passenger ships arrived from California or the South Seas, and later continued on their voyage across the Pacific. The complete history of Matson's passenger ship era is now available in a coffee-table book called "The White Ships." Published in 2008 by Pier 10 Media, available at whiteships.com

  • The shipsdoctor on the SS Lurline was Bob van der Stok. He was a Dutch famous Spitfire Pilot in WW II and escaped from the POW camp Stalag Luft III (the great Escape) in 1944.

  • @PhantomTrader1 Your dad must have known Bob van der Stok, the shipsdoctor on the SS Lurline. Van der Stok was a Dutch famous Spitfire Pilot in WW II and escaped from the POW camp Stalag Luft III (the great Escape) in 1944.

  • My family and I sailed from Honolulu to California on this ship in 1965. I was 10, and I think my sister and I ran around every inch of her but the engine room. What fun!! My mom won a hat contest and we watched the animatatron horse races. I had my 10th Birthday on the ship and I still have the adorable card signed by the captain. What wonderfull memories! But I lost the pen with the floating ship inside. No it was a mechanical pencil.

  • I am named after the Lurline. My dad was a navigator on the ship. Love it and miss it!

  • I was born on Oahu into a Navy family in 1949. When my dad retired in 1957 the Navy sent us back to the mainland/SF via the Lurline.

Can't say I remember it like yesterday but I sure have fond memories of that great sea voyage on that lovely ship. Our family was starting a new life on the mainland n the fist chapter took place for me on the Lurline.

  • my dad used to dive for coins when lurline used to arrive from their voyage. we were kids and waited "in whats the parking lot today" for them to finish diving. i was a little kid at that time 5-6yrs old. this clip brought back memories. all my uncle's used to swim with out of the harbor.

  • My dad worked for Matson for most his working life. Everyone in the family (except me!) sailed out to Honolulu on that ship. She was beautiful. I was on a troopship bound for Vietnam in 1966 and the Lurline zipped by us on the way out the gate.

  • Wow. I cannot tell you how pleased I am to hear this.

Kalani bright is my grandfather. He's passed now, but I have been looking for information about his early life and band, I would be very interested in hearing more about this record. And I will be happy to share with you what i know, as well. :)

  • God Bless the SS Lurline and all who sailed on her. Our trip was in 1966.
