In this clip from "Poisoned Waters," correspondent Hedrick Smith examines the impact of large-scale factory farms, a major source of pollution to US waterways. Industrial scale chicken farms generate 1.5 billion pounds of waste annually—more than the human waste from New York, Washington, San Francisco and Atlanta combined. Watch on air and online beginning Tues, Apr 21 on PBS (check local listings).
More than three decades after the Clean Water Act, two iconic waterways—the great coastal estuaries Puget Sound and the Chesapeake Bay—are in perilous condition. With polluted runoff still flowing in from industry, agriculture, and massive suburban development, scientists fear contamination to the food chain and drinking water for millions of people. A growing list of endangered species is also threatened in both estuaries. As a new president, Congress, and states set new agendas and spending priorities, FRONTLINE correspondent Hedrick Smith examines the rising hazards to human health and the ecosystem, and why it's so hard to keep our waters clean. Watch "Poisoned Waters" on air and online coming April 21, 2009 to PBS (check local listings).
I am not a scientist, but I don't see how a natural bi-product (manure) can be more detrimental to the environment than lab created fertilizers and pesticides. Some of this stuff just seems to play out to big business and "use our stuff cuz it's been tested as safer than manure"...BULLS**T!!! Just another scare tactic to justify limiting private farms and gardens...forcing you and me to buy from corporations.

I don't know where they got their information...but I run a poultry farm and we sell out of our manure quickly....poultry manure is safer than the chemical fertilizers that the "Corporations" would like you to buy...Would you rather eat food that has been fertilized naturally or with chemicals...mmm

Move that crap to a dessert in Austraila or Africa or the middle east even better yet lets start replanting the rain forest if we replant the rain forest that could cause the need for more jobs here in the states and all the way to South America....

What we need to do is slowly get our bodies used to eating manure, but on very minuscule levels. Then by the time we reach tainted water, our bodies will have adapted.

agriculture is more pollutant than factories? What are they going to say next? People breathing probably.

You bag the manure and sell it to organic farmers. Fertilizer is not cheap. I'm sure there are farmers to the east that would gladly take some of that fertilizer off their hands. They could even advertise free fertilizer...you haul.

nohealthcare62 there's nothing sacred about Bison it's meat as well. i'm not sure why you think only one type of animal would be affected in commercial farming.. commercial is commerial no matter how you look at it. besides your not going to live forever might as well get used to it.
