Today we are going to install part number 90185 from Tekonsha, the Prodigy Brake Controller, and we are going to install this on a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. The tow package wiring harness is located underneath the dash, below the steering column, a little bit off to the left side. It is stuck up behind some wires up underneath there so it is kind of hidden, but there is a little tag that comes with it to help you locate it. So we will just untape it from that bundle right here and pull it out, and then we will have room to work on it and make our wire connections. OK, we have got our wires pulled out, and we can go ahead and get them ready to install. And you want to take a second to look at the tag to see which wire does what. Blue is kind of a giveaway, that is the big wire that goes out to the brakes on your trailer. And then red is going to be your 12-volt battery supply right here. And the blue with the white tracer here, that is going to be your brake light circuit. And the white wire will be ground, and the orange wire will not be used at all.

OK, at this point we can go ahead and start making our wiring connections. And the red with the black stripe is going to be the 12-volt power supply. The 12 volts will be black on your harness, so you put those together. And ground is going to be white here, so connect that with the white wire on our tow package. And brake output is going to be blue, so it is going to be blue-to-blue. And the stoplight switch is going to be red, and that goes to the blue with the white stripe on the truck. OK, and we will just take some tape and tape up all our connections and make it look nice and neat. Let us find a spot for our brake controller bracket. There is a nice little flat spot underneath the dash here, so you do not have to put any screws in this part of your dashboard. We can just line it up with the edge right there and just put it against this piece of plastic and that should work out fine for keeping the brake controller in a straight alignment with the rest of the truck. OK, we can go ahead and mount our brake controller up now. Then we will take our cable and plug it into the back of the brake controller. Then we will take our wire bundle and just tape it up underneath the dash to keep it safe and out of the way.

What we have to do next is hook up our wires to the power distribution box. Sometimes it is hooked up, sometimes it is not. But in this case it is not. So what we are going to do is find our wires. The wire for the brake control power is this wire right here. And then the other wire for the 12-volt power supply out back is located down there. You can see here that the two terminals have two different sizes, and they actually go to matching lugs on the power distribution box. You can also go to the auto parts store and get a couple of extra nuts that fit these here too, since the nuts that hold them down are not supplied. Then we will add a 40-amp fuse for the 12-volt power supply going out back to the connector. Then we can put our lid back on and we are ready to go. Once you have your trailer hooked up, you should see a letter C as indicated here. It means you have a connection. And there you have it for part number 90185 from Tekonsha.

  • Thanks so much in december of 2010 our 2007 suburban got rear ended and when i went to hook up the aux 12 volt for our trailers battery and got no voltage i thought the repair place did some thing wrong but nope this is how you do it, now we got to order a battery and controller from ur site and we're set

  • @tomdailet If you are looking under the hood for the red wire to power the brake controller in the cab, it should be between the driver side fender and the power distribution box. If it is not there, you will have to hardwire it yourself, in order to power the brake controller. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  • @tiffnalbe Same problem I have on 2008 silverado. How did you find it? I've looked inside nearby wire bundles (encased by corrugated plastic) with no luck. Took it to chevy, and tech. that knows this stuff was not there--they could not find it. Someone suggested pulling the inside of fuse box up (using the gray handles) and that it might be under fuse box. I've removed the 3 fuse box bolts, but can't lift box far enough to see beneath it.

    Help!

  • Great video, did this today and took me less than an hour to do altogether. It's pretty straightforward once you get everything together. Thanks again!

  • the wire is there on the side its electrical taped to the harness you cant see if if you feel for it youll find it and just have to untape it .... it took me awhile to figure that out

  • @tiffnalbe The power wire is definitely there, somewhere. You will probably have to just dig around the box until you locate it!
