Vegas Urologist infected patients with HIV AIDS (@MakellBird)

The Southern Nevada Health District is warning patients of a local urologist that they might be at risk for contracting Hepatitis C or even HIV.

The warning comes on the heels of an investigation the findings of which led to an accusation that the doctor reused single-use medical devices.

This doctor has been practicing in the valley for decades. Dr. Michael Kaplan has been in town since 1998. He has an office in Henderson.

The case is similar to the recent case involving Dr. Dipak Desai. In this instance health officials tell us the number of patients potentially affected is much lower.

When News 3 stopped by Dr. Kaplan's Henderson office, the lights were on but the doors were locked.

According to documents obtained by News 3, the long-time valley urologist was suspended following a joint investigation by the FDA and the Board of Medical Examiners.

The allegation is that Dr. Kaplan reused endocavity needle guides which are meant for single-use only.

The case is eerily similar to the recent investigation into the practices at Dr. Dipak Desai's endoscopy practice in which tens of thousands of patients were notified of possible exposure to Hepatitis C or HIV.

Here again, the health district is advising many of Kaplan's patients to get a checkup from their personal physicians.

"So while we think the risk is very low to patients and it will only impact patients who had a prostate biopsy, we do think that there is a reason to notify them," said Jennifer Sizemore with Southern Nevada Health District.

Dr. Kaplan will soon have to appear before the Board of Medical Examiners. They could decide to lift his suspension or revoke his license altogether.
