JANFB, you're exactly right. It took me about 2 weeks to master it. It was quite frustrating at first, but once I got used to using the tip of my thumb to control it, it was awesome. I love this thing.
As Camera Educator I love the Steadicam JR but you (specially you!) need practice! See some more tips and tricks at Google search: CameraEducator Blog
Guys I have the JR and bought a Sony VX 2000 where can I get accessories for it like maybe weights etc Help would be greatly appreciated. Buy the way good Vid. Worked with Kubrick on Eyes wide shut and the steadicam operator was amazing. talked about The Shinning tricycle shot allot
I used the JR just when it came out. I found the video pretty good. The device does require a fair amount of practice, about 2 weeks if you want to be really solid.
Not meaning to brag but I was shooting as good as, if not better, than what you see in the video in just a few hours. Try it while riding a horse, now that's a challenge.
The other dork was Ted Churchill, one of the best Steadicem operators ever. Of course the shots look damn smooth with these two operators.
If you want to master a Steadicam, get training. Manuals will not really help. Or at least watch the 'crappy' video. It will take you years to learn what Garrett and Ted are showing in it.
