Our "illusion that things are okay" could also be called an ability to adapt. In evolution this is called natural selection. Not to say those of us who are able to thrive and consume more than we need to must not look to aid those populations who cannot thrive, but we must also be aware that there are environmental, political, social and economic issues that are keeping these people from thriving. We SHOULD support less fortunate populations but only if it makes sense to do so.
