The even, neutral light on the actors ruined it. I think they could have had strobes to break it up a little.

I was watching this scene on my dolby surround system over 20 years ago. The front speakers 15 inch 3-way 100-watters; rear speakers 12 inch 3-way 50 watters. When the last speeder bike slammed into the tree, the sound nearly shook my apartment!
