Channel 7 Eyewitness News (WABC-TV) Correspondent Roger Sharp tells the story of New York City's Hart Island, a part of the Bronx. Rarely seen by the public, the island is today closed to the press and remains in use by the city as a Potter's Field. It was never developed as suggested in this 1978 report. Aired August 17, 1978.

It's a personal favorite of mine for showing how good writing and visuals can produce something really moving out of what could have been a rather run-of-the-mill local news piece.

More info on the island from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hart_Island_(New_York)

  • i heard of this place from the film saints of forth washington sad film sad place

  • one of the people buried on that island is Bobby Driscoll aka the voice of Peter Pan in the disney film. So sad, no one deserves to be buried a potter's field.

  • Anyone ever notice that all the reporters from this time have their jacket thrown over their shoulder when they report? Why? Was that the cool thing back then?

  • Dark and moving.

Heavy stuff-- especially with Condor Pasa looped with the reel-to-reel.

Haunting. Second time watching it, actually.

  • Those are quite the socks on that chubby engineer, LOL.

Thanks for uploading. New York in 1978 was another lifetime for me.
