@mustange550 Because of costumes? What do they look like?

If there a new bridge will be build, it should have like a restaurant underneath of it above the water, with a floor out of glass that would be so cool and extreme that it would probable make the bridge another wonder of the world! :)

The Ambassador Bridge is 1850 ft long. When built it was the longest in the world.

The government's own study recommends 90% of the route needed from 401 to border. Fortunately, the road remains the responsibility of the Province and the new bridge alone does not impact capacity. The new span and the road to 401 are independent projects. The stop lights on Huron Church Road are well-known obstacles that can be eliminated. Route to border is a matter of degrees, not fundamental principle of the need. Thank you for your comment.

One thought for the existing bridge: it could be limited to local traffic using different customs and toll lanes with up to 50% of the lanes being NEXUS lanes (i.e. from Windsor local streets to Detroit local streets, no access to or from I-75, I-96 or Highway 401) while the new bridge could be for the freeway traffic (which would have to go at least to the first 401 exit in Canada or through the I-75/I-96 interchange in the US).
So they are planning to make it go to the same Custom Booths? Wiow It already gets jammed because of costumes we either need more booths or Tell customs to quit harassing American Citizens.

@mustange550 - there are plans for additional Customs booths and continued advocacy for effieicnt Customs processing. Ambassador Bridge has been on the first wave of adopting technology and pre-clearance programs to speed clearance. Have you signed up for NEXUS (passenger cars) or FAST (trucks)?

One issue regarding crossing the Detroit River is that bicycle tourists currently have the following options: place it in one's own car and drive it across (impossible while bike touring), put it in the trunk of a taxi cab and have it driven across ($18 at LEAST, one way, plus normal fare), or hitch hike and stick it in the trunk of someone's car.
Wouldn't it be possible to allow bicycles to cross the bridge normally, as with the Golden Gate Bridge in California, by sharing the pedestrian walk?

That is good comment - but the issue is Customs, since its an international border. The Enhancement Span, with current bridge available for "special uses" and redundancy may make it safe and feasible for bicycles, but it ultimately is a US & Canada Customs issue. (Golden Gate is wholely in the US; Customs is not involved.) Thank you.
