Another show from my attic archives. Lou reed live at Sheffield City Hall 1973. The Berlin Show first time round. If I could re-live one concert this would be it. (Original material is from 35mm slides photographed by myself some years ago). After many a long hour lovingly restoring/enhancing them, I uploaded them here for your entertainment, learning how to use Sony Vegas in the process! The originals were Ektachrome slides. This was one of the very early concerts that I photographed, and I had not quite got the hang of the exposure settings on the camera (all guess work - no meter) 1/60th f3.5. Venue a little dark, so the slides are mostly underexposed. Along came Photoshop and so here are the images given a new life .. This is one of my absolute favourite sets of images. The music here (Sweet Jane) is from DATE: January 27th, 1973 VENUE: Alice Tully Hall LOCATION: New York City, NY...Enjoy!

  • This is definitely NOT the band featuring Hunter/Wagner on guitars, Prakash John, Ray Colcord & Pentti Glan. They went on the road after the recording of 'Berlin' in late summer 1973 until the end of that year, .culminating with the 'Rock 'n' Roll Animal concert in December 1973. This band sounds more like 'The Tots', indeed, Lou is even playing guitar here, himself. Also, Lou dropped the 'Heavenly wine & roses' ending to this song by the time he toured with the Hunter/Wagner band.

  • @2011wipeout You are right, I just used this as a backing track to my slides. It doesn't sound like the '73 tour ..

  • Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, they were Alice Cooper's crew at the time...

  • I thought the drumming was the interesting thing about this performance. One of the best versions I have heard. BTW I have re-done the slides with a much better scanner, so watch out for a director's cut LOL...

  • Blimey, I was at this. Alongside my good friend Pete, God rest his soul. I think we were just amazed to see Reed in the flesh, as if we couldn't quite believe that he actually existed. Though as I recall, he seemed very tiny in his black suit. Perhaps it was just a big stage. Thanks for posting this.

  • @Witlessandtitless It's been thirty-eight years since I've heard this, I like this band.. The drummer is me. Raw and sloppy, but, hey, it's only rock 'n roll.

  • this is Lou with the TOTS, a group of high school kids who've never gotten the recognition they deserved--they sounded great. the fact that I know one of them personally has nothing to do with my opinion!

  • first rock and roll album i ever bought! got it at K mart. Remember it as if were last nite. I was so proud of my self.

  • Just heard the R+R Animal "Sweet Jane" on the radio.... I don't remember ever hearing the studio version on the radio.....lol.... could it be the great guitar interplay ? pretty funny

  • @TheSpoonwood To my ears it is truly one of the greats.. just for the record I remember reading one of his comments some years ago to the effect that it was him who told them what and how to play !! wooops .. stirring it now LOL

  • @kidcalabria I met Lou Reed many years ago and I told how I thought "Rock n Roll Animal" was one of the greatest rock guitar albums...ever , cause it is....Wagner and Hunter killer... he looked at me and told me how the album sucked... Turns out he mightn't have cared for their arrangements of his tunes... lol.... and he had a very very weak handshake, my grandma had a manlier shake. I still my guitar along to that record.

  • This is one of the things that annoys me most of beeing born in 1970 and not having been so lucky to see one of his early concerts. I mean, I´ve seen him and John Cale and Moe Tucker quite a few times in the 90s but, you all know that´s a different story...

So thank you for the musik and the nice photographs!!!!!!!

  • thanks, this is great!
