Just after sundown one recent Friday evening in Venice Beach, California, 100 colorfully dressed musicians halted traffic and marched toward the Pacific Ocean. At the foot of Venice Pier they stopped and 50 drums joined 50 horns at play. After a quick three song set, the 100 odd music makers dashed away, toward the deep orange band of sunset light on the horizon. Was that the end of the show for the amazed Venice Beach onlookers? Would they need to go to the UCLA Stanford football game the next day to hear more? Ten minutes later the eclectically-attired band appeared again, this time on the Venice Boardwalk at the foot of Market Street. There, the tunes just kept on coming. Awed spectators were outnumbered by energetic Stanford University band members and a team of cheerleaders. This jam had soul to spare and was a great creative gift the LSJUMB players came purposefully to share. Every person present, Stanford students, privileged Venice visitors, locals, and especially this writer, enjoyed a prolonged peak experience penetrated mercifully by waves of extremely good musical vibrations.
