During the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt (August 19-21, 1991), also known as the August Putsch or August Coup, a group of members of the Soviet Union's government briefly deposed Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and attempted to take control of the country. The coup leaders were hard-line members of the Communist Party (CPSU) who felt that Gorbachev's reform program had gone too far and that a new union treaty that he had negotiated dispersed too much of the central government's power to the republics. Although the coup collapsed in only three days and Gorbachev returned to power, the event crushed the Soviet leader's hopes that the union could be held together in at least a decentralized form.

  • @eksiarvamus xD you are joking right? Tatarstan has autonomy as well, and what? Lithuania were fighting in the rivers of blood since 1944! Who else did that? Ukraine. And Estonia was… doing nothing and just accepting their new masters from Moscow. In 90’s Estonia had it’s autonomy, cause Gorbachev was sure it will be enough for Estonians. And it was, but then came Lithuanians, stood unarmed against tanks and made vital part in destroying ussr.

  • @MrJupee Well you have a brain of a 15-year old when you think Lithuania brought down the empire alone. Note that it was first Estonia that confronted Moscow with its sovereignty declaration. The fact that Lithuania declared independence didn't really make tham much different than Estonia. The real situation was the same - de facto autonomy, but not full independence since they were without recognition. All three Baltic states were recognized the same day and became fully independent

  • @eksiarvamus so yes, Lithuania had won freedom for all nations in Soviet Union (ok, except Belarus and Russia) while you were just standing and singing. Lol. You, Estonians, are slow, if not Lithuanians, you would still be singing in your revolution :D

  • @chtovimenitebemojem тебя точно маразматики родили , забудь их и марш торговать быстрее, а вечером на панель подрабатывать, ведь школу ты не окончил, а диплом купил за бабки.

  • IT WASNT EMPIRE! IT WAS SHIT!

  • Great memories!!

  • @xxxrrrxxxrrr It's an overly simplified way to see things. Estonia indeed was the first country where the initial revolution began with the night song festivals. Also the sovereignty declaration made Estonia autonomous from Moscow already in 1988. Then Lithuania caught up and declared independence while we decided it would be too risky as of then. As it turned out, it was. 0 people died in Estonia during the Singing Revolution. Factual independence was achieved at the same time.

  • @mjfan653 Lithuania declared its re-independence in March of 1990. One and a half years before Estonia did.

  • estonia actualy was first to rebell and get free, get facts right, and tanks actually fired some shots in moscow
