In September 2001, Shaun's cousin Shane found a fledgeling housemartin on the ground in his garden. He took it to Shaun's Dad's house where Dad and Lorraine, over a period of about two weeks, hand reared it until it could fly.

When they felt it was ready, they set it free. He zoomed off into the sky at a million miles-an-hour, with all the other housemartins.

I love swallows and swifts and martins - all those high-speed sickle-winged birds dazzle me with their aerobatics. It was magical to see one so close.

  • Beautiful video, I'm rearing a baby house martin at the moment, I've had him 3 weeks. I'm hoping I can release him but he is really tame now, asleep on my shoulder as I type this. I tried last night and he flew away several times then flew back to me again. I'm not quite sure what to do, I want him to be free but I also want him to be safe.

    Wildrose and tweet xx

  • This one was really tame but seemed to just know when it was time to leave. It left with all the other housemartins when they migrated for the autumn not long after the video was made in mid-September.
