To everyone who's convinced he's bashing religion, it actually ironic you should think so. Because the song is about religion's hatred for homosexuals. They're basically saying God can never love a homosexual, and Frank is expressing distress at this idea that God can never return his love simply because he's gay, hence the "unrequited love". "I can never make him love me", him meaning God. He's basically saying that if that were the case he'd have no hope. But God's love is unconditional.

Hmmm...I find your interpretation interesting and agree that it could hold a double meaning for unrequited love in both the literal and figurative sense. But I must say that insinuating Christianity is not equally derogatory towards homosexuals is downright laughable. And there is only one God. Allah is God, God is Allah. So I believe I'm thinking of the correct God in this instance. How can ANY religion preach love & peace while promoting hate and ostracization? It simply is not holding.

I don't think this song is even about religion, he's using religion as a metaphor for the love he has for a man that doesn't love him back. Also, considering the references in Frank's songs (especially this one) don't talk about Christianity but rather Islamism and Buddhism, I highly doubt he's talking about the God you're thinking of. It's a bad religion as he's equating believing in a deity who does nothing or is bad for you to loving someone who can't love you back or treats you badly.

I dont understand why everyone always put their two cents in on what they think the song is about. Honestly I think this song is about a icecream truck and for all we know it is unless the artist says "This is what it means"

he said its like a cult and cyanide in his styrofoam cup. Thats what killed all the followers of the Peoples Temple. I can definitely respect the references to Islam and how that could be taken as disrespect though but I looked at the brings me to my knees as a transition from the Islamic reference to the chorus.

he didnt make any direct references to the jim jones incident.

This song contains literal references to islam. (allahu akbar and how they kneel to pray in a mosque.)

But it has double meaning to how a man's romance is unrequited. (one man cult).

Everyone look up Jim Jones and then listen to the chorus again and you will have a better understanding of what he is talking about in this song

He is equating the unrequited love to the cult Of Jim Jones and his followers. The unrequited love is like how the people believed in Jim Jones and followed him till their death(brought them to their knees). Their belief only ended up killing them. Frank Ocean is a genius for these lyrics
