The first ten is the most important part of your screenplay.

  • First paragraph or first page???!! Now that's just plain ol Nazism right there. No one fucking knows if a book, or script, is going to be complete shit by just the first page!! Or ten for that matter honestly. Do you know how many GREAT films exist that start out rather slow but then pick ultimate pace?? What the fuck are you talking about, man??

  • Playmold, I'll respond seriously to your question. I wasn't talking only about pace; slower pacing can be the best choice for a particular story (although it's always a risk in today's storytelling markets). But, in terms of quality, if the first paragraph or first page of a book or script is absolutely dreadful, then no, there is an extremely low chance of it getting better. Unskilled writing is evident on page 100 and page 120, and those first few pages are always the most important.

  • ATTENTION SCREENWRITERS! My special offers linked to the youtube code will not last long. My policy is "first come, first serve," so don't let another writer bump you from your slot. Contact me ASAP if you are looking for notes, coaching or a private course to write that new screenplay. You should take advantage of these savings NOW while they are available! (which won't be for much longer)

  • I KNOW, I KNOW!! My apologies to you kind people who keep wondering where I went. More videos are forthcoming! Right after I posted these first three I got super busy with assignments, so I'm now working on getting a more portable video camera (the Flip Ultra HD, anyone used it?) and I hope to have some new vids up soon. (I actually recorded some from my cheap webcam but they didn't come out) I appreciate your interest.

  • The cat is the indomitable Cannoli and no, she's fine. That was the joke -- that she gets EIGHT+ meals a day! She's spoiled. (and no it's not a reference to Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat," that only occurred to me after the taping) :-)

  • Cat - Please put me down.

What's the cute cat's name? Aaaawwwh.

  • Dude, you are hilariously insane—and insightful. Keep this suff coming, cuz my indie film has to rock.

  • More, Dan. More! I love learning what NOT to do as much as learning WHAT to do. Please, please, please: more insights into pet peeves to avoid!

  • sweet.

  • @Playmold2 Yes they do, I can do the same. If I pick up a book and the first paragraph doesn't catch me, the whole book isn't going to catch me. The first few pages are very critical, they define you're writing style, etc. And if that doesn't match what I'm wanting, I'm not going to enjoy the book....Story could be great, if you can't write it, the story still sucks.

  • Your videos really helped me out, and I appreciate them 'n' all... But, oof! levels! Ears ow.
