Lost Coal power station of Doncaster

Video Explore of the Thorpe Marsh Power station, Doncaster, UK. Alot of the lower sub level is flooded, a nasty trap awaits the unwary!. Cooling towers & 2 hopper buildings remain, along with various minor buildings & railway sidings.

1959 - 1994, Partially Demo'd
The station was commissioned in 1959 and was built as a prototype for all the large modern power stations in the UK. It opened in 1963. It contained 2 generating sets powered by coal, and had a gas turbine set using an industrial static version of a Rolls-Royce Avon aero engine with a capacity of 14.9 MW

The station has been closed since 1994. Much of the station has been demolished and now only its six cooling towers (each 340 ft (100 m) high and 260 ft (79 m) in diameter at the base), two ash slurry hoppers, railway sidings and the station's large adjacent electricity switching station still remain. The switching station was nearly flooded during the 2007 Yorkshire flood, which would have knocked the grid out according to news reports. The structures still stand now because it is feared that any explosion would cause the banks of the nearby canal to rupture.
The power station featured in the final episode of the 1999 ITV drama, The Last Train.

Trap- i was referring to those lagoons in the centre, if you got in, you'd have a hard time getting out, if at all!

It seems that while we have to tell the planners how we are going to reinstate a site to it's original beauty at the end of a project - the big power companies can let their sites fall to rack and ruin ... another case of one rule for us and another for the zeitgeist ...

Great project.

A word of warning to everybody reading though.

Before you start exploring derelict old factories etc, get some information on Asbestos and learn to spot it.

These places are often strewn with broken shards of it. If you disturb it, you could be in for a nasty shock in 20 or 30 years time. You could even take it home to your kids on your clothes.

i have recent photos of the site on facebook & prettymuch everything has changed nearly all the minor buildings have gone along with all the rubble the hoppers are cleared & ready to be dropped & theres array of plant machinery,kabins & a security guard there with one camera that views the center of site guard also calls the police out if anyone is seen on the land all exits have been blocked apart from side entrance near switching compound & railway siding entrance right at the rear

room height of water cos one of the sublevel has a sublevel below it but these guys didnt go into the hidden room even thou the steel plate were bent open enough to crawl thru & that paticular level were dry also anyone wanting a view of the site i recommend you dont go there or if needs are must to keep to the far back behind the cooling towers cos these days the same crew who started the demolition process off are back to level the rest off they have 24 hour guard onsite too.

none of the water i saw was murkyyou could clearly see the bottom & those arent the only 2 flooded areas there are 4 others like that but 5 times the size of those ones & from the looks of things someone tried to float a raft in one may have been to get the power cables from the inside edge of pit (slightly out of reach from above)& all the rooms you see in vid are flattend now none of the supply boards are there either
