Here's a song I always liked that came out in '78 by Sniff'n The Tears called Driver's Seat. I got to make a really bad pun out of the title as well. :) I think this song really personifies the '70s sound. I tried to emulate Luigi Salvoni's drum track by progressively making the bass drum and high hat busier as the song builds.
From a drummers perspective, this style of playing can be an eye-opener. There aren't any fills or even any cymbal crashes for that matter. It reminds me of an interview I read with the great Kenny Aronoff, where he was talking about some lessons he was taking with..I think it was Joe Morello, and the first thing he was told to do was play 8th note triplets in unison for about 10 minutes, without any flams. He thought you've got to be kidding until he did it, and the mistakes were pointed out. Of course this is while listening with hyper-critical ears. I guess the point is, when you're playing something more complex, you can get away with playing looser. Playing something like this, forces you to "get the musical microscope" out, and scrutinize where each fraction of a beat is placed. Because the track is so minimalistic, any deviation sticks out like a sore thumb! And my rendition is a good example of this as it's far from perfect. The basics are always something good to work on!

  • Only a true musician knows how hard it is to keep a steady beat, simple or not. You did a fantastic job on a fantastic song!!!

  • Ummmm...I'm sorry to disagree with you. I have the original up on my computer right now and I've listened to his track and the one from Sniff...he's right on the money! Please...do your research before you post these comments. I'm not trying to be mean...

  • Jawel ++++

  • Beautiful balance between snare and hi hat. Something my drummers seldom acheived. The engineers got it but the stickman sulked. excellent.

  • great job! this is my favorite song, and you are PERFECT!!

  • superb m8 steady beat no messing solid as......... luv the sniffs backing track any idea where i can get it,would love to play along to it myself

  • right on the money man!

  • Wow great job on a fantastic song. keep up the good work.

  • This must be the origin of rap (where they only play one riff over and over). Joking. This is amazing. Such a wonderful song and while I don't play or have an ear for drums (guitar and piano only), I appreciate this post. Thanks. I think the constant repetition is why it is such a great driving song....constant but alive.

  • i played along with guitar on your beat , perfect drumming

  • that was great!

  • kit sounds good. very well played uncomplicated & monotonous song/beat. thumbs up!
