Ahmadjan Madmarov, a human rights defender for 30 years in Uzbekistan, wad the recipient of the 2nd Front Line Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk. Ahmadjan Madmarov travelled to Dublin, at great personal risk, to receive the award, presented to him by UN Special Representative Peter Sutherland.
On presenting the award to Ahmadjan Madmarov, Peter Sutherland said: "The most terrible part of the persecution he is facing is that three of his sons and two nephews have been imprisoned and tortured because of his work for human rights." He went on, " In sharing his story he places an obligation on all of us to do anything we can to press the Uzbek authorities to end this repression and respect human rights and I hope the European Union will continue to make this a priority in their relations with Uzbek Government."
Ahmadjan Madmarov is a regional Chairman of the Independent Human Rights organisation of Uzbekistan (NOPCHU) -- one of the few registered human rights organisations in Uzbekistan. For over thirty years, he has been condemning the gross human rights violations committed in Uzbekistan, such as police torture, arbitrary detention and lack of religious freedom. Threats, restrictions of movement and surveillance have become an almost everyday occurrence for one of the few people in Uzbekistan who dares to speak up against the Karimov regime. In Uzbekistan, the authorities routinely target and persecute human rights defenders in the hope they will abandon their work.
The annual Front Line Award honours a human rights defender, who has displayed exceptional courage in working non-violently for the rights of others as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Soraya Gutierrez Arguello from Colombia, Mohammed Abbou form Tunisia and Aini Abukar Ga'al from Somalia together with Ahmadjan Madmarov were the nominees for the 2005 Front Line award.

If anybody wants to know more about the situation in uzbekistan i recomend you to read dirty diplomacy by Craig Murray.
Whats really dreadful is that the governments of the west just sit and watch. Due to the bullshit called "war on terror".
